Muslims in America

In this section, we will present a selection of essays and articles from scholars exploring the musical traditions of Muslims in America. We present two pieces, one by scholar Hussein Rashid on the Muslim presence in America and the evolution of blues, jazz and hip-hop.

The second, by Sylviane A. Diouf, Director of The Schomburg-Mellon Humanities Institute Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library, presents a deeper exploration of the links between African Muslims and the American blues tradition, complete with audio example. Both essays feature a list of further resources at the end.
